Back to School Shopping That Makes a Difference
Summer is winding down. Thankfully the evenings are getting cooler after the hottest summer on record. Many families are starting the ritual of Back-to-School Shopping. New sneakers and jeans. It's incredible how much the kids have grown over the summer. Now is the time to clean out their closets and make room for all the new fall clothing.
As you sort through the kid’s wardrobes, do you think about how to recycle all that clothing? When you drop bags of clothing off in those ubiquitous bins, do we know if the clothing really gets to people in need or is successfully resold for charity? Did you know that many of those bins are owned by private for-profit industries?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 10 -15 million tons of clothing are donated in the United States each year, About 45% is reused as clothing. Some 30% of worn clothing is cut into industrial rags, and 5% is unusable and ends up in landfills.
The average person buys 60% more clothing items every year and keeps them for about half as long as 15 years ago, generating a tremendous amount of waste. Fashion trends come and go much faster these days. Every social media influencer wants to get you to spend, spend, spend for the latest looks. We now have access to more cheaply made "disposable clothing" that is not manufactured to last.
The average total life span of a piece of clothing is 5.4 years. This statistic shocked me. I do have items in my closet that I've been wearing for more than fifteen years. I guess I am oblivious to the latest trends. No one will accuse me of being a fashionista!!!
The annual environmental impact of a household's clothing is equivalent to the water needed to fill 1,000 bathtubs and the carbon emissions from driving an average modern car for 6,000 miles. If the clothing were used by us just three months more, it would reduce the carbon and water footprints and waste generation by five to 10%.
Right now, less than 15% of people recycle their clothing; Recycling clothing is an essential and painless way for you to help the environment. Make a family plan and see how much of your clothing can be repurposed or recycled.
Recycling 2.62 million tons of clothing per year equates to taking 1.3 million cars off American streets.
Here Are Some Great Clothing Recycling Ideas.
- Join your neighborhood online "things for free group." Find other families to give your gently used clothing to and keep the cycle going.
- Shop in the Kids Secondhand Clothing Stores. You will be amazed at the choice and quality of what you find. Most kids barely get to wear their clothing before they outgrow it.
- Hold a clothing swap in your neighborhood. You can even make it a fundraiser for your local school or charity.
- Create a contest with a prize for the person in your family who can make it through the year without buying anything new.
- Research the clothing brands that will recycle your clothes and give your credit or money toward buying their newly made clothing from recycled materials. You will be surprised how many recognizable brands are doing this. Even Levi’s is doing textile recycling.
Please make a difference for the environment & invest in your children's future by recycling their clothing and shopping with environmentally conscious companies.
If you are going to add new things to your wardrobe, choose socially conscious clothing companies that pay attention to the environment and give back to the community, like The Be Line Products.
